How to Number Pages in a Dissertation Including Opening Pages

It is important to number the pages in any academic work we produce, and for most of us, this has been drilled into us since the first year of our undergraduate degrees. However, page numbering a dissertation is a different kettle of fish, which is why our formatting services are so important. If you're feeling brave, here is a quick tutorial of how to number pages including opening pages. The body of your dissertation including bibliography must be numbered in Arabic numbering (1,2,3), but your contents page, acknowledgements, etc., need to be numbered in Roman numerals (i, ii, iii). To do this, scroll to where you want a page break, click on it, and insert your page number. If you are required to put chapter headings on each chapter, use the section break option, but to keep your numbering the same, there is an option to do so in the header or footer – (it will say continuous numbering). If in doubt, professional proofreaders will do all of this for you.

The contents and subsequent copyright page (if required) are not numbered, so at the end of the subsequent page, you will need to scroll down – click on Breaks and then click on Continuous, which indicates that this is the end of a section. From there you locate the end of your next section, the one that will be numbered in Roman numerals containing your page of contents, acknowledgements, signature that this is your own work, preface, list of tables and illustrations, in the exact order your institution requires them to be in. Once you have located this, click on the Breaks and select Continuous.

You need to do this for every one of your chapters, locate the end of it, click on the breaks tab and select continuous. Now that you have created the section breaks, you need to go back and number accordingly. You may want to number as you go along, but it is easier to do it one-step at a time, so you know where you are going.

The first section, with your contents page and copyright page does not need to be numbered; move onto the next section, where you should format your page numbers accordingly in the header or the footer of the document; make sure you select Roman numerals, that start with the correct numeral. For example, if the contents page was one page and the copyright page was one page, your numbering should start at iii. Once you have done this, close the header/footer and move onto the next chapter. You will see that when you come to the next section there is nothing there. From here, you can format your page numbers to continue throughout the rest of your document (so they don't start at number one in every section). Since you have broken up the document already, simply go through it at the beginning of each break and add in chapter one, chapter two, chapter three, etc. If you do get into a muddle, send it to us, we will proofread your work and formatting it accordingly.
